Overview

The Vision Implementation Committee (VIC) debuted a Hillsboro 2020 Vision Awards Program to honor an Outstanding Individual and Outstanding Organization. These awards, which "recognize Hillsboro citizens, both individuals and organizations, for their exceptional service to the community in promoting achievement of the Hillsboro 2020 Vision and Action Plan," were awarded for the first time at the 2003 Annual Town Hall Meeting.

Recipients

2008 OUTSTANDING INDIVIDUAL:  TIM ERWERT

Tim Erwert, recently-retired Hillsboro City Manager, was selected as the 2008 recipient of the Hillsboro 2020 Vision Outstanding Individual Award. A small sampling of Tim’s contributions to Hillsboro 2020 include:

  • Securing funding, dedicating staff and remaining committed to a decade of citizen-based planning, visioning and implementation activities.
  • Serving on the Hillsboro 2020 Vision Implementation Committee and Steering Committee from inception to his retirement in 2008.
  • Tirelessly reviewing, editing and improving Hillsboro 2020 documents and outreach initiatives.
  • Providing a critical mix of “first steps” and “key investments” that helped bring on board and maintain the many other community organizational partners that make Hillsboro 2020 work.
  • Hosting and encouraging staff to present to dozens of community representatives from around the world, seeking to learn how Hillsboro became a model for community-based visioning.
  • Mandating that Hillsboro 2020 be accountable, by reporting implementation status to the community and City Council on an annual basis through the Town Hall and Annual Progress Report.

As stated by VIC Chair John Coulter at the 2008 Hillsboro 2020 Vision Town Hall, this project would not have been possible, let alone successful, without the leadership and trust provided by Tim from the outset. He asked the community the age-old question, “how can we do better,” then made sure citizen priorities were carried out. The VIC is proud to recognize this truly visionary leadership.

2008 OUTSTANDING ORGANIZATION:  INUKAI FAMILY BOYS & GIRLS CLUB

The Boys & Girls Club has made a truly remarkable series of contributions to Hillsboro. A few of the many highlights include:

  • Providing a special place and engaging programs, as well as a full repertoire of skill-building activities for young people in the middle of their formative years.
  • Adding an additional 12,000 square feet to the existing campus. The new space includes a Nike gymnasium, weight room, Kids Café and a full-service kitchen.
  • Over 200 children receive healthy after-school meals each and every day of the school week. Some participate in the Kids Café cooking classes and nutrition programs.
  • Offering expanded activities including health and fitness programs, sports leagues, art enrichment activities, homework assistance, science projects and computer and software education programs. Teenagers can also participate in college tours and job training.

The VIC is honored to have the Inukai Family Hillsboro Boys & Girls Club as a partner, and grateful for all of the organization’s contributions to our youth and emerging leaders.
